lot of exams
July 3, 2008
yes.. there’s been CS, SS and finally HDL today. CS was ok-Nyquist saved me. SS , too easy. for the first time in engineering i actually wrote all 8 Qs !!! guess it will also be the last one. HDL was Boring. just filled with bad theory Qs asking examples every single place and how to program Adders in vhdl and verilog. half adder, full adder , full adder using half adder.. Sheesh! i wanted to just go to sleep there. The weather was almost right for that too.
Today was the All India Bandh called by the BJP to protest against the Amarnath shrine land controversy. It had mixed response i guess. Mangalore stayed pretty closed down since its under the BJP government. Bangalore didnt have too many problems. Infosys stayed close today i heard. The worst thing was the part that we had Exams today. The morning saw all 2nd year engineering students trying to catch their respective college buses as there were no private buses running. after exams at 12:30 we had a special bus trip back to mangalore. About 100 of us crammed in there somehow for the nearly 2 hour journey back. Its fun when your around friends, on a empty stomach as you skipped lunch to cram urself into the middle, trying to get a decent footing or perhaps even hanging on for dear life in some cases ![]()
Red earth and Pouring rain
February 7, 2008
‘Ask him why there are hypocrites in the world.’
‘Because it is hard to bear the happiness of others.’
‘When are we happy?’
‘When we desire nothing and realize that possession is only momentary, and so are forever playing.’
‘What is regret?’
‘To realise that one has spent one’s life worrying about one’s future.’
‘What is sorrow?’
‘To long for the past.’
‘What is the highest pleasure?’
‘To hear a good story.’
the above excerpt was from the book i just finished reading 4 days back: Red earth and pouring rain.
its Vikram Chandra’s first novel.
the above conversation takes place between Saira, a little girl, and Hanuman, the Monkey God.
Curious??
i liked this book very much. its theme being very unique, gently mixing history with fiction, stories intertwining,
thus making for an incredible read!

Manorama Six Feet Under
January 12, 2008
there i was channel surfing while having breakfast and decided to check out the local movie channel. there was a hindi movie playing ( just started) which i recognized as “Manorama Six Feet Under” i had wanted to watch it cause i had heard that it was a different type of movie. true, it is a non-mainstream movie. the main protagonist is Satyaveer(Abhay Deol) is a down on his luck junior engineer . he used to be a writer whose first work “Manorama” sold barely 200 copies which was why he lost interest.
the movie opens portaying him in a bored life in a small rajasthani town , married with a kid, from where he sees no escape. one day a woman appears and asks him to play detective akin to his book’s creation “detective Raghu”. Satyaveer is pending enquiry regarding a bribe that he took and hence jumps at the idea of making some money rs 20,000 to be exact. so he takes up the assignment and his life spirals out of control. the woman dies ( murdered , he says) , he gets beaten up by thugs and his marriage gets rocky. what happens after this? how the plot unfolds? watch it
i liked the way the movie was picturised , directed. the dialogues where good although the rajasthani dialect is at times difficult to understand but everything is explained so not much ambiguity is left( there still is some ) The story flows smoothly , is a bit slow at times. It incorporates the nuances of small town life and politics. i loved the detailing.
by the way , it appears that this is a remake of a Hollywood movie “Chinatown” starring Jack Nicholson and directed by Roman Polanski.
